Lakeland Fire Station No. 7

Located at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, Fire Station No. 7 is a dual-purpose facility that serves both the community and acts as an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) station. With three bays dedicated to community response and two for airport operations, the station provides essential services to Lakeland and its regional airport. Miller Construction Management led the project as one of their legacy builds prior to their acquisition by JF Petroleum Group.

This station, certified under the GBI Green Globes Sustainable protocol with a two Green Globes rating, was the first of its kind for ARFF facilities in the U.S. and set the standard as Florida's highest-rated sustainable fire station at the time.

The Challenge

Dual-Use Demands

Creating a facility that serves both the community and airport operations required a design that could meet the unique demands of an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) station while still accommodating the local community’s emergency response needs. Balancing these functions without compromising efficiency or safety, all within the constraints of sustainable construction requirements, presented a unique challenge.

The Solution

Innovative Design Approach

A specialized layout was developed to seamlessly separate community and airport functions, with three bays dedicated to local fire and rescue and two designated for ARFF. The design included a multipurpose room capable of functioning as a training space and emergency command center. Sustainable construction practices were also prioritized to achieve Green Globes certification, positioning the station as a model of environmental efficiency in civic construction.

The Outcome

Certified Green Success

Successfully completed as the first Green Globes Certified ARFF station in the country, the facility achieved two Green Globes, setting a new standard for sustainability and dual-functionality in fire stations. This recognition also marked it as the highest-rated sustainable fire station in Florida at the time, enhancing Lakeland’s reputation for forward-thinking public infrastructure.
